Olivia looked at her watch and sighed. She was going to be late. She hated being late. Even if it was just lunch with Susan. She stuffed her files into her briefcase and decided to bring them with her instead of trek all the way back to her office.

She pushed through the heavy glass door and immediately shielded her eyes from the bright midday sun and cursed. If she’d gone back to her office she could have grabbed her sunglasses. She looked down as she approached the courthouse stairs, taking them quickly but carefully in her heels.

“Olivia?”

Olivia nearly stumbled as she heard her name being called. She looked up, eyes scanning the direction she heard it from. Bridge? Her brows furrowed for only a moment before she felt a tentative smile cross her lips. All thoughts of getting to Susan were forgotten momentarily as she watched the woman walk over to her. Her eyes were hidden behind sunglasses, but her lips held a small, shy grin.

“Hi.”

Olivia dropped her hand from her eyes and Bridge slipped off her sunglasses. She looked very put together with her hair down and her button down shirt and jeans and Olivia felt her heart beat a little faster.

“Hi. Are you here for… business?” Olivia asked carefully.

“No, I was hoping to run into you, actually.” Bridge fidgeted with her sunglasses, opening and closing them in her hands. Olivia could easily tell she was nervous. But she couldn’t contain her smile as it grew wider. She’d been thinking about the enigmatic farmer and had been more upset than she ought to be at how things turned out the last night of the summer festival. She’d stayed away, thinking Bridge didn’t want to see her again. But here she was, apparently waiting for her.

“You were?” she asked, trying to rein in her smile and failing.

Bridge studied her sunglasses and Olivia had the odd desire to reach her finger out and tip her chin up so she could see her eyes.

“Yeah, I wanted to apologize. I was unfair to you and… Do you have a minute? Could we get a coffee or something?” Bridge asked, finally looking up at Olivia with those brilliant, hazel eyes. It was then she remembered her lunch date with Susan.

“I’m actually late to a lunch meeting with a colleague,” Olivia said and Bridge immediately took half a step back and ducked her head.

“Oh, of course, you’re working. I’m sorry I bothered you--”

“No!” Olivia said a bit too forcefully as she reached for Bridge’s forearm. The touch seemed to freeze Bridge in her tracks. For Olivia it felt like something had snapped into place. “You aren’t bothering me at all. I’ll be an hour tops and then I can meet up with you… if you can stick around?” She knew she sounded near desperate in her hopefulness, but she didn’t care. She didn’t know Bridge very well, but this, coming to find her, to apologize, it felt big. Important.

“Yes, I can do some
